The Louvain Institute for Ireland in Europe has been for many years promoting, in an informal way, the culture/arts of Ireland both North and South.
More recently it has formalised this aspect of its activities under the name "CultureIreland".
CultureIreland offers a bridgehead into Mainland Europe for all forms of artistic expression from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Essential to identifying possible opportunities for the promotion of Irish arts is the development of a cultural network. This network must be capable of delivering necessary information about upcoming events and be a conduit through which specific Irish artistic activities can be promoted.
The Louvain Institute for Ireland in Europe has over the past 17 years built up a significant network. This network benefits enormously from the Institute's close proximity to Brussels.
It gives access to more than 180 regions in Europe through their representative offices in Brussels in addition to the embassies of all the EU member states and the embassies of the applicant states. The Institute has undertaken joint projects with the cultural Institutes from other countries and regions operating in Belgium including those from Denmark, France, Holland, Germany, Britain, Italy, Finland, Spain and Portugal. The Institute has strong links to the organisers of cultural events in both the French speaking and the Dutch speaking regions of Belgium as well as the city of Brussels.
The Institute is keenly aware that a significant number of events right across Europe, in which there would be potential for Irish participation, are organised or funded by local authorities. Currently the Institute is working to extend its network further to include historical and major cities - particularly those with significant cultural programmes.
