The role of the Louvain Institute for Ireland in
Europe is to facilitate the process of EU awareness in Ireland and the promotion of
the Arts/Culture of Ireland within Mainland Europe. This is
captured in the Mission Statement of the Institute:-
- To help maximise the benefits, for both
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, of EU membership, by increasing
awareness of EU policies/programmes and developments as well as mainland
European business practices, through the provision of high quality programmes
for business, the public sector, higher education and the voluntary sector.
- To facilitate the promotion of all forms
of cultural activity from both parts of Ireland, including the Arts, Theatre,
Music, Dance and Literature.
The Louvain Institute for Ireland in Europe is a non-profit organisation established
according to Belgian law. It is non-denominational and non-governmental. The
Board consists of leading figures from the economic, public and cultural life
in both parts of Ireland, as well as senior officials in the European
Commission. Since its foundation in 1984, the Institute has enjoyed the
patronage of the King of the Belgians and successive
Presidents of Ireland.
Future Challenges and Opportunites
The increasing pace of European integration and
future enlargement represents a significant challenge for the entire European
Union. It represents a particular challenge to the smaller member states and regions.
In the years ahead the European Union will become
significantly larger, more complex and more competitive. For smaller member
states, such as Ireland, and peripheral regions, such as Northern Ireland,
changes in the Institutions and the decision-making system will inevitably
result in a decrease in influence. At the same time, export opportunities for
our goods and services will significantly increase, in the enlarged European
Union.
The importance of maintaining a strong awareness, within both the private sector and the public
sector in Ireland, of the implications of further changes, new policies, new
opportunities, and the overall developments in Europe, will continue to
increase as the pace of integration increases.
EU enlargement will also provide new opportunities for the promotion of
Ireland's cultural and artistic contribution to a Europe rich in cultural diversity.
